Quicksilver Surfboard
Concept Design
Finalist: Quicksilver International Design Competition 2007
The premise of this entry in Quicksilver’s International Product Design Competition was to utilize new materials, technologies, and fabrication methods to launch Quicksilver as a leader in innovative surf equipment, not just clothing. The design features a hollow, no stringer, carbon fiber monocoque construction, and a uniquely shaped underside to increase speed and control stiffness.
Following the known physics of fluid properties, two compressed channels near the rear of the board create increased velocity in the exhaust water flow (“Venturi effect”). Additionally, the molded construction would also allow for features on the deck side of the board that cannot be easily integrated using traditional hand-shaped cores.
